The Rules of Life.

Updated: Dec 19, 2018

Richard Templar titled this rule (among the 100 Rules in the book): "You are not in charge" and I have always been put off by that title, but each time I read it, along the way there is a twist to it, and that made all the sense.

Permit me to lift some statements exactly the way he wrote them. And this rule is something everyone have to keep at heart a lot. “No matter how much you think you are in charge, sorry you are not, and because you are not doesn't mean anyone else is. So the best favour you can do yourself is sit back and enjoy the ride.”

Richard Templar said "if you or I are in charge, we would probably interfere too much and get rid of the bad stuff and human race would die out ever so quickly due to stagnation, lack of challenge, lack of motivation, and lack of excitement". I remembered this movie 'Heroes' with Hiro Nakamura being the time travelling guy, at a particular time, he can go back in the past, change some things because he feels the present would be perfect (or imperfect) with or without them, but many times he would discover everything is more messed up than before he tampered with it. There is pure beauty in not being able to figure everything out, or understanding everything, this makes you curious and help you to always want to learn but much more it makes you dependent on HE that knows everything.

Richard Templar said "you might not be running the show but that doesn't discharge you of all responsibilities. You still have obligations — you still need to be respectful of the world you live in and the people you live in it with— it is just that you don't have overall responsibility for the whole show and everything in it. This understanding helps you to relax and enjoy the show, cry at the sad bits, laugh at the interesting stuffs, hide during the scary moments. It's a show and you are just the audience.”
